“The atmosphere is a finite and perishable resource that encloses our planet in a sometimes benevolent, sometimes despotic embrace. The challenge is to understand, to predict, and to conserve this precious resource. More than ever, we are in a position to meet these challenges, and we are eager to do so.”
Walter Orr Roberts, May 1967
Inaugural Director of the National
Center for Atmospheric Research
About Us
The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) established Friends of the National Center as an alumni and community engagement program in support of UCAR’s Community Programs and the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research.
The Friends mission extends to fundraising for STEM education, early-career initiatives, innovation, and increasing access and opportunity for the sciences.

Friends Projects
Friends Education Fund
Every year a portion of the funds raised by Friends of the National Center will be made available to support students, early career scientists, and STEM education. These funds are separate from UCAR’s general operating or restricted funds and are typically donations from individuals and corporations. So far, the Friends Education Fund has sponsored early career scientists travel to present their work at conferences and provided funding for SciEd and GLOBE programs to exhibit at the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA).
Friends of the National Center focuses on advancing Earth system science in areas of student fellowships, scientific education, access to scholarship, increasing diversity and inclusion, and more.
