NSF SOARS Program

Building the Next Generation of Earth System Science Leaders

For nearly three decades, the U.S. National Science Foundation Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (NSF SOARS) program has helped talented undergraduate students transform their passion for science into impactful careers in atmospheric and Earth system science.

NSF SOARS is more than a summer research experience. It is a nationally recognized undergraduate-to-graduate bridge program that combines research, mentoring, and community to help students succeed in higher education and beyond. Through multi-year participation, students gain hands-on research experience, professional development, scientific communication skills, and access to a powerful network of mentors and peers.

Today, more than 90% of NSF SOARS participants continue on to graduate school, with many earning advanced degrees and becoming leaders in research, education, government, and industry.
